WHAT TO EXPECT
The Freedom Papers Tour, led by Frewuhn (pronounced "free-one"), is an exploration of freedom, cultural resilience, and sonic interpretation that will span the southern border states of Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi. The trajectory of Frewuhn’s work over the past five years has been aimed at getting off of the wheel of oppression spanning over two generations through the lens of Freedom Summer, protest music, and the cultivation of personal and collective Freedom Songs. Frewuhn's multidisciplinary approach combines music, poetry, and performance to create an immersive experience that resonates. This is a culmination of work from the Freedom Summer Mixtape Side A, 2020, which debuted at Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, and Side B, to be released in 2023/24.
Cassie Watson Francillon is known as a visionary harpist, avant-garde contributor, and powerfully expressive interdisciplinary artist; breaking conventions to construct “sacred sonic architecture” through her concert grand harp. Influenced by hip-hop, jazz, psychedelia, and Black American spirituals, she crafts a fresh, modern-day revival through collaborations and radical sonic soundscape, even when on her own. Her sound reflects the journey, joy, and lamentations of modern Black American transcendence, coupled with spiritually sonic investigations of her Haitian lineage.
